Border temporalities

Figur 1: Gate of the Peace Wall in Belfast.
Borders have often been studied as spatially located phenomena, yet, in recent years, their importance also in and as temporal processes has been increasingly recognized in border studies. While borders can be analyzed as devices that organize space, they can also be understood as temporal instruments that can be applied to prolong, shorten, expand or postpone mobility. Further, by applying a temporal lens to the study of borders, the historicity and multiplicity of bordering regimes and bordering logics can be studied. Links between bordering practices, heritage-making and memories also expose several layers of border temporalities. Heritage-making is an enterprise tied to the making of nation-states and their territory. Memories on their side speak into heritage-making when they materialize as memorials and at museums. However, memories also follow individuals, possessing the power to direct and haunt everyday life as lines of divisions, expressive of bordering practices inserting between individuals and social groups.
