Associate Professor Mikkel Højlund from the Department of Regional Health Research and Hospital Sønderjylland has received the EPA Next Generation Psychiatrist Award in the category of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. The award is presented by the European Psychiatric Association (EPA).
The award is given to early-career researchers in recognition of strong scientific profiles that demonstrate excellence, innovation and commitment to advancing psychiatry.
For a number of years, Mikkel Højlund has conducted research in psychopharmacology and evidence-based treatment, including studies of the effects and safety of psychiatric medications, as well as meta-analyses and register-based research.
In connection with his nomination, Professor Christoph U. Correll from Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin highlighted Mikkel Højlund’s research and international collaborations. Professor Correll describes him, among other things, as an extremely talented and already highly successful early-carer clinical scientist, whose work combines rigorous methodological expertise with a deep clinical understanding.
Jakob Grauslund, Head of Department at the Department of Regional Health Research, welcomes the award:
– Mikkel Højlund’s award is a strong international recognition of the research carried out at the Department of Regional Health Research. His work on systematic analyses of treatment effects and safety in psychiatry is closely aligned with our research strategy, where we aim to promote excellent, person-centred and applied research.
Mikkel Højlund’s research has contributed, among other things, meta-analyses on antipsychotic polypharmacy, relapse prevention in schizophrenia, new treatment options for schizophrenia, and metabolic side effects associated with antipsychotic treatment. He is also involved in several international research collaborations and uses Danish register data to strengthen the evidence base for psychiatric treatment.
The award is presented by the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) and was presented at the opening ceremony of the EPA Congress in Prague.
