The Research Unit for Maritime Health and Technology (MHT) builds on decades of research initiated by the Centre for Maritime Health and Society (CMSS), which was funded by the Danish state for 32 years. CMSS was established to understand and improve health, safety, and working conditions among seafarers, fishers, and offshore workers. Internationally, CMSS was the most cited Danish research unit (Danish Shipping, 2019), and the research was among the 10% most cited in their field in 2024 (CMSS external evaluation 2024).
MHT builds on this legacy by integrating research in new technologies to improve maritime health and safety, and resilience. Although financial cuts have necessitated the closure of some research activities, MHT has strengthened its strategic focus on focus on occupational health and safety, the work environment and Human Factors, such as analyses of safety and risk in connection with new energy propulsion. In doing so, MHT addresses some of the evolving challenges of the modern maritime sector, including the green transition, mental health and diversity-crewing.
MHT researchers deliver teaching and are coordinators of education modules at Master level:
- MSc in Risk and Safety Management; Module: "Health and Safety Management." This programme is offered by SDU together with Aalborg University.
- MSc in Public Health; Module: "Project and Management." This programme is offered by SDU.
MHT researchers also engage in:
- Ph.D. and Master project supervision.
- Assistance in Research and Development for Maritime academies.
- Support to Authorities.
- Maritime Education and Training offerings for companies.
