SDU Center for Energy Informatics joins major Villum programme on the green transition of the built environment
The SDU Center for Energy Informatics is joining a major national research initiative supported by Villum Fonden, which has awarded one billion DKK to strengthen research in the green transition of the built environment. The ten-year programme, , brings together leading Danish universities to develop new knowledge, technologies, and solutions that reduce the environmental footprint of construction while promoting sustainability, circularity, and energy efficiency.
SDU Center for Energy Informatics contributes to two key research areas: Digitalisation and Automation and Sufficiency, Well-being, and Energy Efficiency. In these areas, the center builds on its strong expertise in Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data analytics, Digital Twins, and Artificial Intelligence to develop the digital infrastructure that supports the design and operation of sustainable buildings. By integrating sensor networks, data platforms, and intelligent models, the center enables continuous data exchange and real-time insights across the entire building lifecycle. These contributions strengthen the digital foundation for sustainable buildings and infrastructures, ensuring that digitalisation becomes a driving force for energy efficiency, comfort, and environmental performance throughout the built environment.
The CEBE programme brings together researchers from the University of Southern Denmark, the Technical University of Denmark, Aarhus University, and Aalborg University in a joint effort to make Denmark a global leader in sustainable construction research. The programme’s interdisciplinary focus combines civil engineering, material science, energy systems, health, and design with advanced digital technologies that support integration and optimisation across all phases of the building lifecycle. Using digital twins, real-time analytics, and simulation-based design, the programme aims to create seamless connections between design, construction, and operation, enhancing energy management, occupant well-being, and long-term resilience in the built environment.
The CEBE programme will officially begin on 1 January 2026 and continue until 2035. Through its participation, the SDU Center for Energy Informatics reinforces its commitment to advancing digital innovation in the building sector and contributing to a sustainable, intelligent, and human-centred built environment.
