Danish Participation in IEA IETS Task XXIV Subtask 1 - Process Integration for Industry Decarbonization

Project Description

Task XXIV Subtask 1 focuses on enabling systematic and scalable process integration for industrial decarbonization. It addresses the urgent need for standardized modeling approaches to optimize industrial energy systems and their integration with energy grids and renewable resources.

The subtask is structured into six activities:

  • ACT 1: Development of specifications, ontologies, and procedures for generating and sharing ex-ante models.
  • ACT 2: Development of sector-based industrial process integration models.
  • ACT 3: Documentation and validation of decarbonization technology and energy system models, including electrification and storage.
  • ACT 4: Process heat and mass integration for industrial symbiosis, waste reduction, and carbon management.
  • ACT 5: Development of sustainability metrics, including KPIs for energy efficiency, circularity, and socio-economic impacts.
  • ACT 6: Roadmaps, dissemination, and continuing education to ensure broad adoption and knowledge transfer.

Danish partners will contribute case studies, models, and validation activities from national projects (e.g., high-temperature heat pumps, waste heat recovery, and digital twin solutions), thereby integrating Danish expertise into global decarbonization frameworks. Dissemination will include national workshops, collaboration with organizations such as Greenlab Skive, Kalundborg Symbiosis, Energy Cluster Denmark, and Green Power Denmark, and targeted engagement with industry, utilities, and policymakers.

The expected outcomes are:

  • An open-source repository of validated ex-ante models.
  • Reports on industrial decarbonization pathways.
  • Standardized sustainability metrics and benchmarks.
  • Roadmaps and policy recommendations to guide industry transition.

These results will support Denmark’s climate targets (70% GHG reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050) while enhancing competitiveness and leadership in sustainable industrial solutions.
