Project Description
IEA IETS Task XIX Subtask 3 focuses on advancing industrial electrification as a key driver of decarbonization. The subtask builds on prior activities (Subtasks 1 and 2) and now concentrates on system-level impacts, process integration, and the role of electrification compared with other defossilization measures.
The subtask is structured into five key activities:
- Activity A: Subtask management and coordination.
- Activity B: Mapping the current status of industrial electrification globally, consolidating case studies and major projects.
- Activity C: Assessing system-level impacts of industrial electrification, including flexibility, integration, and operational challenges.
- Activity D: Evaluating the role of electrification within broader industrial decarbonization pathways and developing an “electrification merit order.”
- Activity E: Establishing collaboration with other IEA tasks and TCPs to promote synergies and knowledge exchange.
Danish participation contributes to these activities by providing:
- Case studies from Danish industries, especially in food, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors.
- Analysis of electrification pathways including direct (heat pumps, electric boilers) and indirect (Power-to-X, hydrogen) solutions.
- Insights into sector coupling and integration of waste heat into district heating networks.
- Dissemination through workshops, national reports, and collaboration with organizations such as Energy Cluster Denmark, Green Power Denmark, and Danish District Heating Association.
The outcomes will include synthesis reports, repositories of electrification projects, comparative evaluations, and roadmaps for industrial electrification. These outputs will guide Danish industries, policymakers, and researchers in accelerating electrification while maintaining competitiveness and supporting climate neutrality by 2050.
