People with both substance use and gambling problems often find themselves in particularly vulnerable situations. Research shows that these problems frequently co-occur and may mutually reinforce each other, resulting in more complex and burdensome life circumstances. Nevertheless, we still know relatively little about who is affected by this dual issue and how it impacts their daily lives, well-being, and help-seeking behaviours.
Purpose
This research project will generate new knowledge about individuals who experience both substance use and gambling problems. Through two sub-studies, we examine both the prevalence and characteristics in the population and explore the personal experiences of those living with these challenges. The project aims to contribute new knowledge that can be used to improve prevention and treatment services for this often overlooked target group.
Method
Sub-study 1 is a register- and survey-based analysis using data from the Danish Health and Morbidity Surveys (SUSY) and the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD). We investigate the demographic and social conditions, health behaviours, and mental health issues associated with concurrent substance use and gambling problems.
Sub-study 2 is a qualitative investigation based on interviews with individuals who have experienced this dual issue. We explore their everyday lives, experiences of stigma, and needs for support and treatment.

The results will be presented in Q3–Q4 2026 and in Q3–Q4 2027.
