Based on the initiatives in the Danish Government’s 2020 action plan against tobacco, as well as subsequent measures in this area, the National Institute of Public Health monitors tobacco and nicotine use among children and young people from 2020 to 2030. This represents a unique opportunity to monitor and evaluate comprehensive new legislation and, along the way, identify new opportunities for intervention.
Purpose
The purpose of the §SMOKE-study is to evaluate how new legislation on tobacco and nicotine-containing products affects children and young people in Denmark.
The evaluation is intended to assess the effects of the legislation, generate knowledge about tobacco and nicotine use, and enable comparisons with experiences from other countries. The results are widely used for various types of research, dissemination, and as a current status overview of the field.
Method
The §SMOKE-study is conducted among a random sample of the population aged 15 to 29 years. For each wave, a new population sample is invited. The first data collection was carried out before the new legislation came into force on 1 April 2020. The results from this baseline serve as a reference for subsequent measurements.
So far, annual data collections are planned through 2030.
The first follow-up measurement was conducted in January–March 2021. The second took place from 20 September to 1 November 2021. All subsequent measurements are conducted annually between September and November.
