At the inagural seminar Assistant Professor Paulo André Dias Gonçalves gave a presentation about Light–Matter Interactions at the Nanometer Scale.
Thanks to guests for joining and celebrating Paulo André Dias Gonçalves!
Abstract
The interaction between light and matter lies at the core of many fundamental processes in nature; understanding these interactions has enabled us to control them, driving the development of many of today’s technologies. Recent advances in fabrication and spectromicroscopy have provided unprecedented access to the quantum-mechanical effects underlying nanophotonic phenomena, revealing limitations of purely classical electrodynamic descriptions. In this talk, I will present quantum-informed theoretical frameworks for modeling nanoscale light–matter interactions in various nanophotonic systems, highlighting how these approaches provide new insights and unlock new capabilities. I will cover topics such as quantum corrections to plasmon spectra, plasmon-enhanced light–matter interactions, and the role of quantum effects in governing electron–light–matter interactions in the context of state-of-the-art electron-beam spectroscopies.
